Sinhagad Fort combines historic remains with a hilltop setting and a connection to a defining Maratha battle. Formerly known as Kondhana, it is best known for the 1670 battle in which Tanaji Malusare led the Maratha effort to retake it from Mughal forces.

The fort has two main gates: Pune Darwaza faces Pune, while Kalyan Darwaza faces the Konkan region. Among the remains are fortifications, bastions, water-storage features, barracks and storehouses. Ancient temples and Lokmanya Tilak’s Bungalow are also among the sights.

Maharashtra Tourism gives the fort’s elevation as 1,312 metres. Khadakwasla Dam is 15 km from the fort, making it a possible addition if you are planning a wider outing in the area.

When should you go, and how should you prepare?

When should you go, and how should you prepare?

Maharashtra Tourism describes October–February as the cool-season visiting period and March–May as warmer. In summer, it recommends visiting early in the morning or late in the evening. During the June–September monsoon, take extra care on the trails because the paths can be slippery.

Choose footwear suited to a hill walk if you plan to trek, and take particular care on wet sections during the monsoon. The Sinhagad Village climb is estimated at 1.5–2 hours, so factor that uphill time into your plan.
